The creation of the intranet portal for the Emory University Libraries, dubbed "MyStaffWeb", was an exercise in patience, timing and the ability to take a new approach to things we had learned earlier. It was met with focus group criticism, but slowly gained momentum as more and more found it easy to navigate and use on a daily basis.
The Icons
Since this form of stylized intranet had never been implemented before in the Emory Library system, great care was taken in the creation of the icons to be used to navigate the site.

A main factor in the creation of the icon set was an intuitive ease of identification. So naturally, time related functions would feature a clock and calendar, edit features would feature a red teacher's grading pencil and the programs would be represented by a small 80's era green screen terminal window. The same "make-it-simple" design ethic followed when designing the icons for the feedback and logout buttons.

To give the intranet portal a bit more personality, the "greeter" box used color to indicate time and also employed a little humor for nightowls and those experiencing an error.
